Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has secured a second term in office after winning Sunday’s presidential runoff, according to preliminary results released by the National Electoral Council (CNE). With 90% of the votes counted, CNE President Diana Atamaint announced that the trend in favor of Noboa is irreversible.
Representing the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) movement, Noboa defeated Luisa González, the opposition candidate from the Revolución Ciudadana party, who is closely aligned with former president Rafael Correa. González, in a separate press conference, stated she would not recognize the election results.
In the first round of voting on February 9, which featured 16 presidential tickets, Noboa narrowly led with 44.17% of the vote, while González trailed closely with 44%.
Noboa’s new term will begin on May 24 and will be his first full four-year mandate. His initial term started on November 23, 2023, after winning a snap election triggered by the early departure of then-President Guillermo Lasso, who invoked the constitutional measure known as “muerte cruzada” to dissolve the National Assembly and call for early elections.
Throughout his campaign, Noboa focused on two central issues: tackling insecurity and reviving the economy. His platform, encapsulated in the slogan “Nuevo Ecuador” (“New Ecuador”), addresses the country’s pressing challenges, including rising violence from criminal groups and a deepening energy crisis marked by frequent blackouts.
